All the patent attorneys at Beck Greener are scientists or engineers, working in one or more of the following fields:

the physical sciences
the chemical sciences
the biological sciences

As well as having first degrees in a science or engineering, most of the patent attorneys have research experience, either as part of their Masters or as a result of completing a Doctorate.  Further, a number of the attorneys have worked in industry.  As a result, the patent department has considerable experience and understanding not only of research, researchers, inventors and product development, but also the commercial realities of bringing new inventions to market in the UK and Europe as well as overseas (through our overseas attorney contacts). Alongside offering filing and prosecution services worldwide, and general searches and advice, they can advise you on the commercial aspects of patents including assignments and licensing.

The majority of the trade mark partners and associates have a legal background, with several having trained to become barristers or solicitors before going on to qualify as trade mark attorneys.  Others are also patent attorneys, and have more scientific backgrounds. All can provide you with search, filing and prosecution services, advice in relation to registrability, enforcement and infringement, commercial services such as assignments and licensing, as well as acting in oppositions and other contentious matters.

Beck Greener’s experience and expertise in the field of trade marks is recognised by the industry.  The firm is amongst the top 20 filers of British Trade Mark Applications in the country, the top 50 filers of EU Trade Mark Applications, and ranked number 2 for appearances at oral hearings before the UK Intellectual Property Office.  In addition, partners Ian Bartlett and Rowland Buehrlen both appear in the top 10 of the list of trade mark attorneys and solicitors by appearance at hearings before the UK Intellectual Property Office.  (Source: CITMA Review, Issue 448, March/April 2019).

A number of the partners and associates advise in relation to copyright, and registered and unregistered designs. In particular they can file and prosecute design applications on your behalf, advise you as to unregistered design rights, and advise in respect of copyright in a commercial and industrial context in the UK and Europe as well as overseas (though our overseas attorney contacts).

The majority of the partners and associates in the firm represent clients at oral hearings before the European Patent Office (EPO) and/or the UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO).  Further, a number of partners and associates at Beck Greener are qualified IP Litigators, entitled to practice before the High Court in intellectual property disputes.
