Our Expertise

At Beck Greener, we believe that clients want to know that the people working on their patents are the best people for the job.  An unusually high proportion of our qualified attorneys are partners, and those who are not yet partners are viewed as likely partners.  Any work that is undertaken by trainees or newly qualified attorneys is supervised very closely to ensure that quality is kept high.  All of our qualified attorneys are qualified as both UK Chartered patent attorneys and as European patent attorneys.

As noted in The Legal 500 UK “Beck Greener is 'very responsive' and 'provides excellent guidance as to the subtleties of EPO practice'.  The firm has particular strength in chemistry and technology and provides 'excellent service with personal attention' from highly experienced partners and attorneys”.

We work with a wide range of clients often guiding them from initial concept to commercial success, whether acting for a major multinational, a small or medium-sized business, or an individual inventor.  Working in partnership with our clients, we are committed to understanding their business requirements, building excellent long-term relationships.

The firm can assist you from before an application is filed, through to, and beyond, the patent being granted.  The Beck Greener team on any job will be right for the demands of the matter in hand.  Sole inventors and SMEs will work with one or two dedicated, approachable attorneys who can advise on all aspects of patent protection, providing clear, relevant advice tailored to the client’s particular legal and technical needs, whilst working within an agreed budget.

Larger clients may work with a greater number of attorneys, but still benefit from the same focussed, direct, commercial approach shaped by their specific requirements. Several of our attorneys have worked in the Intellectual Property departments of multi-national companies, whilst others have significant experience working in research and development.  This experience combines to give the firm a significant edge in providing commercially-focussed, practical advice to businesses and individual clients on obtaining, utilising and managing their patents effectively across the world.

We draft, file and prosecute patent applications before the UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO) and the European Patent Office (EPO).  Further, using a trusted network of foreign attorneys we also file and prosecute cases around the world.  Alongside our expertise in British and European matters, we are particularly experienced in US patent law and practice, and also have close links in the Far East.

Beck Greener has an impressive and lengthy record in opposition and appeal proceedings dealing with post grant invalidity actions at the European Patent Office, acting for both patentee and opponent. As noted in The Legal 500 UK our patent team of “genuine problem solvers” is adept at handling opposition and appeal proceedings at the EPO.

The quality of our work is confirmed by our excellent success rate in contentious proceedings at the European Patent Office.  Since the start of 2013, we have met our clients’ requirements in over 79% of cases before the Opposition Division and the Boards of Appeal. Our success rate in cases before the Boards of Appeal during this period has been 95%.  Two recent examples of published decisions from the Boards of Appeal of the European Patent Office include:-
