Expertise and Experience

Rowland’s experience and expertise is recognised by the industry.  He is fluent in both French and German and has over 17 years’ experience of trade mark practice.  Rowland has an excellent working knowledge of international trade mark issues and database rights, and is an expert in EU Trade Mark law.  Rowland is qualified to practise as a trade mark attorney under the laws of both the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland, assisting him to continue to practise before the EUIPO in relation to European Union Trade Marks and Designs post-Brexit.  He practises regularly before the EUIPO and their Board of Appeal (with his cases cited in EUIPO’s own guidelines), as well as handling cases referred to the General Court where several of his cases have been cited in subsequent decisions.  He particularly enjoys addressing contentious disputes, such as trade mark opposition and infringement proceedings.

Rowland is based in and heads up our new office in Alicante, Spain. Close to the EUIPO this ensures that whatever happens in the Brexit negotiations, the firm will continue to be able to provide all of the services that are currently offered in relation to the filing and prosecution of EU Trade Marks and Designs.

As an experienced advocate, Rowland regularly represents his clients at hearings before the UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO) and the Appointed Person, making detailed legal submissions and cross-examining witnesses, with a very strong track record. He appears in the top 10 of the listed trade mark attorneys and solicitors by appearance at hearings before the UKIPO (Source: CITMA Review, Issue 448, March/April 2019).  He also has an excellent record of successfully litigating internet domain name disputes before Nominet and ICANN.  Rowland represents clients in a diverse range of industries  including food producers, clothing manufacturers, financial service providers, international salon business, world famous rock bands, and manufacturers of domestic appliances and home entertainment equipment.
