The environment
Our ‘Greener Beck Greener’ project identifies, implements and monitors ways to improve our environmental performance.
Having signed the Camden Climate Change Alliance’s (CCCA) Climate Commitment, we are working hard to achieve the Borough’s joint carbon emissions reduction target.
Under our ‘Reduce-Reuse-Recycle’ initiative we have doubled the amount of waste that we recycle, and no longer send any to landfill. This ‘zero to landfill’ goal was achieved by switching to First Mile for our waste and recycling collections.
It was followed by the award of the Silver Recycling Standard in 2017 and the Gold Recycling Standard in 2020, in recognition of the fact that we now recycle over 90% of our waste.
Energy usage has been tackled by replacing all halogen spotlight bulbs with LED bulbs, while our ‘Switch It Off!’ initiative helps to ensure that lights and all non-essential electrical equipment are turned off when not in use.
The results speak for themselves: compared to 2013, our baseline year, we have reduced daily electricity consumption by 45% and CO2 emissions by 59%.
We have been awarded the CCCA ‘Cutting Carbon’ Mark of Achievement every year since 2015.
Under our ‘Commute not Pollute’ scheme, we seek to reduce or offset carbon emissions arising from travel. Most hearings, for example, are now conducted by telephone or video conference, while staff are offered interest free travel loans for season tickets or bike loans through the Cyclescheme®. We also offer hybrid working between home and the office.
