New Partner
Beck Greener is delighted to announce that Dr Jon Markham is joining the partnership with effect from 1 April 2016.
Jon has a thriving patent practice. With a background in physics, Jon specialises in a wide range of technologies including mechanical devices, semiconductor technologies, electronics, telecommunications, computing and software. He has comprehensive experience in the optoelectronic, automotive and aeronautical industries.
Jon’s commercially-sponsored research for his PhD related to novel organic semiconductors for organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs).
Having formerly worked in-house for Dyson, Jon joined Beck Greener in 2009. He is well known in the profession through his contributions to the CIPA Guide to the Patents Acts and the monthly updates on UK patent case law for the CIPA journal.
Peter Smart’s Retirement
After a glittering career of 35 years spanning all aspects of IP work from trademark prosecution to work before the EPO’s Enlarged Board of Appeal, Peter Smart has finally come to a Decision which cannot be appealed. He has retired from day-to-day practise at Beck Greener. Peter will remain as consultant to the firm for the next 2 years. We wish Peter a long and happy retirement and would like to thank him for all his invaluable contribution to the firm.

After many years of discussion, preparation, and recent delays, it has finally been announced that the Unified Patent Court Agreement (UPCA) will come into effect on 1 April 2023, with the so-called Sunrise Period beginning on 1 January 2023.
Could a grace period for patent filings be introduced into the EPC?

Any publicly available, enabling disclosure that occurs before the filing or priority date of a patent application before the European Patent Office (EPO) is currently novelty destroying (unless there has been a breach of confidence). A grace period in which a patent application can still be filed following a disclosure of the invention by the applicant itself exists in a number of countries but there is no equivalent provision in the European Patent Convention (EPC). In June 2022, the EPO released a report reviewing the impact that implementing a grace period in Europe would have for applicants. The purpose of the review was to provide an evidence-based assessment for the potential economic impact of the introduction of a grace period in Europe.
